These Dinky Book Reviews (DBR) bubbled up out of my brain when I first started writing on The Internet.

That was 2011.

Naïvely back then thought I would go it alone and give it a go to become a freelance writer.

All I knew about this new medium was brevity was even more the order of the day than the old print model on its way out.

So much like NIBs (news in brief in print journalism), DBRs were going to be the NIBs of the book reviewing world.

Such is the mind’s ambition.

I also thought I would set myself the task of summing up the secret heart of the book in a single sentence.

Well I’m still writing on The Internet and I’m still wrestling with distilling the books I read and listen to and talk about into the dinkiest nugget of a review.

These days, in 2024 writers are rebranded and repurposed content creators.

So with my trusty AI interns I continue aplenty…

And to be delightfully honest, inventing these AI author talking heads to review their own books has been a really exciting and fun development for this project.

All with the added benefit of that beautiful creature hindsight and a wonderful dose of dramatic irony.

If you have any suggestions for who and what book to do next please do send me an email: hello@nikkiwordsmith.com

I love hearing off you.

Thanks for reading, Nikki

Note: There are hundreds of these little blighters to upload and gather into one place so please bear with!

Note For The Reader: All Dinky Book Reviews are done alphabetically by author surname. You can use CTRL+F to do a keyword search.

Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson

Generation X by Douglas Coupland

Little Book of Hermès by Karen Homer

I’m no economist, but if you can afford to spend £3,000 on a blue crushed velvet cardigan, you can afford to set up a subscription at your local independent bookshop, and buy at least one local author book a month.

Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf

Oh dear reader this book was not just a clever sketch on society, it was the greatest anti-war novel of all time.
1925 Original First Edition Dust Cover by Vanessa Bell sister of Virginia Woolf
