I want to be your tree
a human said to me.

Sincerely,
I want long brown arms
to wave up and down
stretching far
and lovingly
round and round
your torso trunk
and hold you up
when you are drunk.

I want to be free
parasite me said to the tree.

I have been so stuck
without much luck.
Words rasped out
through knotty wood
branches lay dead
covered in mud.
I couldn't grasp
individuality, much less
spontaneity.

They hugged so hard my legs gave way.
Arms snapped like twigs; leaves shook the ground.
Were they trying to help or hinder?
Suddenly, from behind the gorse
someone with a hoary voice
shouted out without a doubt those haughty words:‘Timber!’
